Our Maths Learning Culture
To be successful mathematicians, we believe that children have to develop a conceptual understanding of number: they must understand all concepts and ideas fully, and be able to apply their learning in a flexible way. Rather than simply being taught to follow a set of procedures, our children are challenged to grasp the ideas that underpin their learning. Children are given the opportunity to see how different mathematical ideas are interrelated in challenging, practical and exciting learning contexts.
Central to this philosophy is our ‘Mathematical Culture’, which outlines the qualities that we value in our mathematicians. By promoting these qualities, we are encouraging children to see mathematics as both a logical and creative subject.
Children are encouraged to work collaboratively, explaining their reasoning and learning in interactive classroom environments. The mathematics provided is challenging, practical and engaging. We also make active use of assessment to ensure that work is accurately matched to the specific needs of the learners, and allowing time to address the specific misconceptions that the children may have. This approach has led to outstanding attainment in mathematics in recent years.
Research shows that early maths skills are one of the strongest predictors of later academic achievement. Therefore, we encourage parents to play an active role in supporting your child through their mathematical journey.
